How to Add Hyperlinks in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop
Adding hyperlinks in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator isn't exactly simple, but it's possible. Here's what you need to do.
With any type of project or presentation, it can be helpful to include links to resources or citations. It's easy to do this in Microsoft Powerpoint or Word. But what about in our favorite image editing programs?
Adding hyperlinks in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator isn't as simple as selecting text or right-clicking an image; the option isn't really built into either program. If you need to add a hyperlink to some text, an image, or any other object in Photoshop or Illustrator, you're going to need to get a little bit creative.
How to Add a Hyperlink in Photoshop
The easiest way to add a link in Photoshop is to use the Slice tool. The catch here is that you will have to save and share your document as an HTML file.
After you've opened your file in Photoshop and decided where to add a hyperlink, select the Slice tool. You'll find it by clicking the Crop tool in the tools menu and holding the mouse button down until you see a list; you want the one with a knife icon. You can also use the Photoshop keyboard shortcut C.
Use the Slice tool just as you would use the Selection tool. Draw a bounding box around the part of the image that you would like to add a link to. Right-click your newly inserted slice and click Edit Slice Options.
In the dialog box that follows, insert your link in the URL field. If you want the link to open in a new window, select "_blank" from the dropdown menu for Target. Click OK.
Once you're ready to save your file, click File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy). In the dialog box that comes after, the only thing you need to select is Preset. You can select any of the JPG or PNG options and click Save.
Type in your file name, and click the File Format dropdown. Then, select HTML and Images. Hit Save, and you're done.
How to Add a Hyperlink in Illustrator
You can add a link in Illustrator using a similar approach to the one described previously. After all, Illustrator's Slice tool works just like the one in Photoshop—it creates a partition that separates parts of the image into "objects" that can be assigned URLs.
Another way involves "hiding" a hyperlink in Illustrator. This makes it so that clicking on an object in front of the link activates it.
To do this, select the Text tool (or press T), and insert your link on top of the image or object you want to add the link to. Make sure to include http:// when you add the link.
You're going to need to find a way to hide the link's text. You can place it behind the object by right-clicking and selecting Arrange > Send to Back. You can also change its color to the same color as your background, or to the object that you're linking it to, as long as it's a solid color.
Hit File > Save As. In the next window, enter your file name. For your file format, select PDF.
